Apple previewed iOS 18 today in Cupertino, California. This major update includes more customization options, the biggest redesign ever of the Photos app, new ways to manage your inbox in Mail, and the ability to send Messages over satellite.

With iOS 18, you can arrange apps and widgets anywhere on your Home Screen, customize buttons on the Lock Screen, and access more controls in Control Center. Photos are now organized in a new single view with easy access to favorites. Mail sorts emails into categories using on-device intelligence, and iMessage gets new text effects.

You can also use Messages over satellite when you don’t have a cellular or Wi-Fi connection.

iOS 18 introduces Apple Intelligence, a personal smart assistant that uses advanced technology to understand and create language and images, and take action across apps. It’s built with privacy in mind and works across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

“We’re excited about iOS 18. It offers incredible new features like more customization, a redesigned Photos app, and better ways to stay connected with Messages,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “Apple Intelligence will transform the iPhone experience with intuitive and powerful features, all with privacy at the core. We can’t wait for users to try it.”

New Levels of Customization and Capability

iPhone users now have more ways to customize their Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Control Center. You can arrange apps and widgets anywhere on the Home Screen, even above the dock or to fit around your wallpaper. App icons and widgets can have a dark or tinted effect, and you can make them larger to create your perfect setup.

The Control Center has been redesigned for easier access to everyday tasks and more customization. You can quickly access things like media playback, Home controls, and connectivity by swiping between them. You can also add controls from third-party apps, like unlocking your car or starting a social media post, all in one place. The new controls gallery shows all the available options, and you can customize the layout, adjust the size of controls, and create new groups to suit your needs.

Photos Gets a Unified View, New Collections, and Customization

Photos has received its biggest redesign ever to help users easily find and enjoy special moments. There’s a simplified single view with a familiar grid and new collections that organize photos by themes without needing albums. You can pin collections to keep favorites handy. A new carousel view shows daily highlights of your favorite people, pets, places, and more. Autoplaying content throughout the app brings your photo library to life. The app is customizable, so you can organize and pin collections, and choose what appears in the carousel view.

Powerful Ways to Stay Connected in Messages

iMessage now has new text effects that make conversations more lively with animated letters, words, phrases, or emojis. You can also add formatting like bold, underline, italics, and strikethrough to better express your tone. Tapbacks now include any emoji or sticker, and you can schedule messages to be sent later.

For messaging people who don’t have Apple devices, the Messages app supports RCS for better media sharing and more reliable group messaging compared to SMS and MMS.

iOS 18 also introduces Messages via satellite for when you don’t have cellular or Wi-Fi connections. The Messages app will automatically prompt you to connect to the nearest satellite to send and receive texts, emojis, and Tapbacks over iMessage and SMS. With Dynamic Island, you’ll always know when you’re connected to a satellite. Messages sent via satellite are end-to-end encrypted for privacy.

New Privacy Features Designed to Empower Users

iOS 18 gives users more control over their privacy and how their iPhone connects to accessories. You can now manage who can see your apps, how contacts are shared, and how your iPhone connects to other devices.

Locked and hidden apps keep your information private. You can lock an app to protect its notifications and content, and you can hide apps by moving them to a locked, hidden apps folder. When an app is locked or hidden, its content, like messages or emails, won’t show up in searches, notifications, or other parts of the system.
