Lewandowski converts stoppage-time penalty to give Barcelona win

Xavi has been feeling extra pressure even though he announced he’ll leave Barcelona as coach after this season.

In the recent match against Celta Vigo, Robert Lewandowski scored a penalty kick in extra time after missing his first attempt. This helped Barcelona win 2-1, easing some pressure on the team before an important Champions League playoff.

Lewandowski’s first penalty attempt was saved by Celta goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, but he got another chance to take the penalty after a video review showed that Guaita moved off the goal-line too early before Lewandowski’s shot.

In the end, Lewandowski calmly slotted the ball into the corner of the net during the seventh minute of stoppage time. This goal secured the victory for Barcelona, following a previous draw against Granada in which the team faced criticism from its fans.

Reflecting on the penalty incident, Lewandowski mentioned, “I’m not sure what happened with the first penalty, but the goalkeeper moved off the line too quickly, so I got the opportunity to score in the second attempt as usual.” He emphasized the importance of securing the three points and expressed the team’s focus shifting towards the Champions League.

Barcelona will be facing Napoli on Wednesday in the first leg of the round of 16 in the Champions League. This marks their return to the knockout rounds after being eliminated in the group stage for two consecutive seasons.

“It was a hard-fought victory, but we earned it,” said Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández.

Xavi has been feeling the pressure, especially after announcing his decision to step down as Barcelona coach at the end of the season. Despite this, the team has managed to secure 10 out of 12 points since the announcement.

In the Spanish league, Barcelona currently trails seven points behind the league leaders, Real Madrid. Real Madrid has the chance to extend this lead to 10 points if they win against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. Barcelona is also two points behind second-placed Girona, who will be playing against Athletic Bilbao on Monday.

Barcelona holds a three-point advantage over Atletico Madrid, who secured a convincing 5-0 win against Las Palmas.
