Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, two of India’s biggest telecom companies, have raised the prices of their plans within 24 hours. This significant price hike, which goes up to Rs 600, affects pre-paid, postpaid, and data add-on plans. The new prices will start from July 3.

Airtel announced that this price increase will help them invest more in better technology for improved quality and coverage.

As a result, many prepaid users are buying new data packs before their current plans expire. However, Jio has removed two popular plans that offered unlimited 5G data: the Rs 395 plan with 84 days validity and the Rs 1559 plan with 336 days validity.

Here is a comparison of the new prices for various plans after the price hike:

Consumers are unhappy with the price hike and have expressed their discontent online. However, telecom companies have said they need to raise prices to maintain a healthy profit and improve their infrastructure.

Many users are choosing to recharge with annual plans before July 3 to avoid the impact of the new prices.

Reliance Jio has announced that it will raise the prices for all its prepaid and postpaid plans starting July 3. The benefits, such as call minutes and data allowance, will stay the same. Shortly after Jio’s announcement, Airtel also said it would increase the prices of its plans, effective from July 3.

Jio Platforms Limited is launching two new apps. The first is JioSafe, a secure communication app for calling, messaging, and file transfer, costing Rs 199 per month. The second is JioTranslate, an AI-powered app that translates voice calls, messages, text, and images, costing Rs 99 per month. Jio users can use both apps, worth Rs 298 per month, for free for a year.

The announcement comes a day after Jio bought 14.4 MHz of spectrum in the 1800 MHz band for ₹973 crore in the recent auction.

India’s spectrum auction ended quickly on June 26, with telecom companies buying over ₹11,300 crore worth of radio waves. This is only 12% of the ₹96,238 crore minimum value the government had expected.

Experts believe the telecom sector will be very active in the second half of the year. Tariff hikes from Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are expected soon, and there may be new developments in 5G technology.

The last price hike happened in December 2021, when rates were raised by 20%. Telecom expert Prashant Singhal predicts another increase of 20-25% within a year. He says current tariffs are unsustainable due to high data usage, including free 5G speeds, and possible misuse.

Singhal had earlier forecasted a hike within 30 days, noting that telecom prices haven’t risen despite other costs going up due to inflation.

Market expert Prakash Diwan expected the hike, especially after recent elections and the spectrum auction. He believes the market is prepared for it and sees it as inevitable.

“But interestingly, they have increased prices by 20% on average, and up to 25% for some of the more expensive plans. This move is seen positively because many expected two hikes of 25% each. With this initial hike of 20%, it paves the way for potentially larger hikes in the next six to nine months. As the market accepts these price increases, they will become normal. Ultimately, consumers will bear the cost, but overall, it’s seen as a positive outcome,” Diwan explained in simpler terms.
