The latest price hike is the second within a year. The Karnataka Co-operative Milk Producer’s Federation announced that consumers will receive an extra 50ml of milk in each packet.

Amid criticism from the Opposition over the increased price of Nandini milk, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah clarified that this is “not a hike” in the traditional sense. He explained that the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) will charge ₹2 more because each milk packet will now contain an extra 50 ml of milk.

The Chief Minister emphasized that there is no increase in the price per litre of Nandini milk. Instead, the price is adjusted to account for the additional 50 ml per packet.

Mr. Siddaramaiah stated that this decision was made to ensure that dairy farmers with surplus milk are not turned away at procurement centres.

Currently, a 500 ml packet of Nandini toned milk costs ₹22. The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) will replace this with a 550 ml packet, priced at ₹24. Similarly, the 1000 ml (1 litre) packet, which was priced at ₹42, will now be sold as a 1050 ml packet for ₹44.

Prices for other categories of Nandini milk will also increase. Here are the revised prices:

  • Santrupti milk: ₹57
  • Samrudhi milk: ₹53
  • Shubham Gold: ₹51
  • Homogenised Shubham milk: ₹51
  • Shubham milk: ₹50
  • Special milk: ₹50
  • Homogenised cow’s milk: ₹48
  • Homogenised toned milk: ₹45
  • Toned milk: ₹44
  • Double toned milk: ₹43

The Chief Minister posted on X that milk production in Karnataka has increased by 15% compared to last year. Last year, the average daily production was 90 lakh liters, and this year it has risen to 99 lakh liters per day. To manage this surplus and ensure farmers are not turned away, KMF has decided to add 50 ml more milk to each packet, with only a ₹2 charge for the extra milk. There is no increase in the per unit price of milk.

Addressing last year’s ₹3 increase in milk prices, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah explained that the extra money collected was used to support dairy farming in the state.

He said, “When our government came into power, the average daily milk collection was around 72 lakh liters. We increased the milk price by ₹3, and the additional funds went directly to the farmers, making dairy farming more profitable. Additionally, good rainfall this year has provided plenty of green fodder for cattle. Because of these factors, milk production has now reached nearly 1 crore liters per day.”

State Cost of 1 ltr milk
Karnataka Nandini ₹44
Kerala Milma ₹52
Delhi Mother Dairy ₹54
Gujarat Amul ₹56
Maharashtra Amul ₹56
Andhra Pradesh ₹58

The Karnataka Co-operative Milk Producer’s Federation (KMF) announced that milk prices under its brand “Nandini” will increase by ₹2 per litre starting June 26. This price increase will remain until further notice.

To add value for customers, KMF said that each 500 ml and one-litre milk packet will now include an extra 50 ml.

KMF attributed the move to provide an extra 50 ml of milk to the current harvest cycle, due to which the storage of milk across all district unions is increasing every day.

Defending its move to hike prices, the KMF said the revised selling price is still lower when compared to other co-operatives and milk bands sold in other major states of the country.

This is the second price increase in less than a year. In July 2023, the Karnataka government allowed KMF to raise milk prices by ₹3 per litre, even though the federation had requested a ₹5 increase.

At that time, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah defended the decision, saying that the revised prices were still lower than milk prices in other states.

Meanwhile, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the Congress government in Karnataka for the recent price hike.

Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, R. Ashoka, posted on X, saying that the poor and middle class are already facing difficulties, and this price increase is seen as an unnecessary burden resembling the imposition of an Emergency.
