NEET
NEET: The NEET UG counselling was supposed to start today, July 6th.

The counselling for NEET UG 2024, which was supposed to start on July 6, has been postponed. This delay comes after the Supreme Court decided not to postpone the counselling on the same day. The Supreme Court, led by CJI DY Chandrachud along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will address various petitions related to NEET UG 2024 on July 8. These petitions raise issues such as alleged paper leaks, requests to cancel and re-conduct the exam, and concerns about the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) procedures.
NEET: The NEET UG counselling process involves several rounds, including stray vacancy and mop-up rounds, for students who passed the medical entrance test. Eligible candidates need to register, pay fees, choose their preferences, lock them in, upload necessary documents, and physically attend their designated institute.
Specifically, NEET UG counselling under the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) includes seats in government colleges, central and deemed universities, and seats reserved for Insured Persons (IP) quota beneficiaries in ESIC medical colleges. Seats at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune are also part of this process.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) recently retested 813 out of 1563 candidates on June 23. After the retest, the number of top scorers decreased from 67 to 61. Originally, six candidates had a perfect score of 720/720 because of grace marks given for time lost during the exam. However, in the retest, they didn’t achieve a perfect score again. Nonetheless, these candidates still scored very high, with scores above 680.

2024 NEET UG controversy update
Earlier on July 5, the National Testing Agency (NTA) told the Supreme Court that cancelling the controversial NEET-UG 2024 exam would be very harmful to the public interest, especially to the career prospects of those who passed it. The NTA also stated that only a few cases of unfair means were reported, which were unrelated to the alleged malpractices mentioned by petitioners. The NTA highlighted measures taken to ensure the exam’s integrity and mentioned that a committee reviewed 63 cases of unfair means and recommended appropriate actions.
The Supreme Court is set to hear various petitions on July 8, including those alleging irregularities in the May 5 exam and demanding a fresh exam.
In the recent NTA exams, a record-breaking 67 students achieved a perfect score of 720, which was a historic achievement. Among them, six students from a centre in Faridabad, Haryana, raised concerns about possible irregularities.
Following this, 1,563 candidates who received grace marks in NEET-UG were asked to participate in a re-test, but 750 of them chose not to take part.
An investigation into an alleged paper leak has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), leading to the arrest of six individuals, including Aman Singh, identified as the main conspirator.
Recently, the Union government filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court opposing the suggestion to conduct NEET-UG 2024 again. The government argued that this could disrupt the academic schedule unnecessarily, as there isn’t enough widespread evidence of misconduct.
The NTA supported this stance in a separate affidavit to the Supreme Court on the same day. It argued against cancelling the exam, stating that it would harm the opportunities of deserving students. The NTA acknowledged that while there were isolated cases of malpractice, strict actions were already being taken against them.
